Frequently asked questions

IELTS Progress Check provides official, computer-based IELTS practice tests that are assessed and scored by official IELTS markers.

Every IELTS Progress Check Report includes an indicative IELTS band score result, with official feedback on each section of the test. This will help you to improve your preparation for your real test.

You will only be able to submit your test for assessment once you have completed all four sections. You will receive your IELTS Progress Check Report within five days of completing the test.

You will receive 120 days of access for each IELTS practice test you purchase.

Your IELTS Progress Check report, including your indicative IELTS band score and marker feedback, will be ready within five days of completing the test. You will receive a link to your report by email. To access your report via the IELTS Progress Check site, simply go to the ‘My Account’ tab and select the test you took. There will be a notification on the screen when your results are ready.

IELTS Progress Check is an official online preparation tool which enables you to try authentic test content in an online environment and enables you to get official feedback from IELTS experts. However, given that this is delivered online (whereas the real test is delivered in a face-to-face environment) there are inevitably some differences.

  • IELTS Progress Check practice tests are not timed. We recommend you time yourself to get the most realistic result, however we do not enforce a timer because we want you to be in control of your practise. This way, if you are interrupted during your practise, you can return and resume the test when it is convenient for you.
  • Before the Listening and Speaking section you will need to check that your computer or iPad has speakers with sound switched on and that your microphone settings are working. You will be prompted to test your microphone at the beginning of the Speaking section and to record a sample to check everything is working correctly.
  • During the Speaking section, we show a timer counting down how much time you have to answer each question. Don’t worry if you talk for slightly longer than the recording allows. We will have enough of a sample in order to assess your answers. In the real test, the examiner may enable you to speak for slightly longer if you have a lot to say but will usually move you along to the next question.
  • If you do not hear a question in the Speaking section, it will not be repeated. In the real test, you are able to ask the examiner to repeat a question. Don’t worry if this happens in the practice test, as you can start the complete Speaking test again.
  • If you need to take notes during your practice test, you will need to make those separately (e.g. using pen and paper) as there is not a ‘notes’ tool within IELTS Progress Check. You will get your IELTS Progress Check results within five days of completing a whole test. In the real test, results are made available after 13 days.
  • Your IELTS Progress Check results cannot be used to support applications for study, professional registration or immigration purposes.
  • Finally, due to the fact that these are practice tests which you take in your own time, within conditions we cannot control, the results you get are indicative only. In addition, they are a reflection of the standard of English you demonstrate in that particular practice test only. In other words, just because you achieved a band score ‘6’ in your IELTS Progress Check practice test does not guarantee that you will receive the same score in your real test. That will depend on your own performance on the day of your real IELTS test.

The IELTS Progress Check is a tool designed to assist you in your English language test preparation, so we feel you should be allowed to complete it at your own pace. While we recommend completing the Listening, Reading and Writing sections together without pausing (as you will have to on your real test day), we do realise that you may be interrupted or wish to take your time. We also recommend that you time yourself during your practice test to get an idea of how well you would do under real test conditions.

Yes. The pace at which you sit the test is up to you and you can review the answers. However, please remember that during the real test you will have time to review your answers within each section of the test but once you have moved onto the next component you won’t be able to return to the previous one. Therefore, for the most authentic test experience (and to get a realistic score) from your IELTS Progress Check, we recommend sticking to the same conditions as you would have to in the test, wherever possible.

Don’t worry. Simply go back to IELTS Progress Check via your browser history, bookmarks or the link in your registration email. The answers to the questions you have completed will be saved. However, due to technical restrictions, the Listening and Speaking recording will start again from the beginning. Although if you have already completed and submitted your recordings they will have been saved.

Please note that at present there is one version of each IELTS practice test available for purchase:
