Learn about the English language requirements for Australia
If you want to study, work or migrate to Australia, you may need to prove your English proficiency. The exact requirement depends on your goal, the visa you are applying for, and the institution or organisation assessing your application.
Let's break the topic into three parts. First, what English level do you need to study in Australia? Second, what do you need for an Australian visa? And, third, are there any extra English requirements linked to work, migration or professional registration? We’ll explain what to look for, which tests are commonly accepted, and how to avoid the mistakes that often catch applicants out.
English requirements for studying in Australia
If your goal is to study in Australia, your education provider usually sets the English entry requirement for your course. The University of Sydney, for example, states that its standard English language requirement is IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, although some faculties and courses have different requirements.
IELTS is usually the gold standard for entry, but universities may also accept more than one way of proving English proficiency. According to The University of Queensland, this can include previous study completed in English, recognised qualifications, or accepted other English language tests that have an equivalent score to IELTS.
Higher English requirements
It is also important to remember that some courses have higher requirements than the university standard. The University of Sydney notes that some programs have additional requirements linked to external registration or accreditation, which is especially relevant in areas such as nursing and other professionally regulated fields.
Are you eligible for an English waiver?
Some universities have rules that exempt you from providing an English test score. The University of New South Wales (UNSW) calls this an English waiver. For example, if you're from an English-speaking country you may not have to take an English language test.
English and your student visa
If you are applying as an international student, there may also be separate student visa requirements to check. Most international students need to meet English language requirements both for course entry and for the student visa process, although some applicants may be exempt depending on nationality or previous study history.
The takeaway is simple: do not rely on one source alone. Check the entry requirements for your course, then check the visa rules that apply to your situation.

English requirements for Australian visas
For visa purposes, the most important source of information is the Australian Department of Home Affairs. The department states that some Australian visa applications require evidence of English language proficiency.
Similar to many universities, the Australian Government's immigration department also accepts IELTS, as well as various other English tests. For many visas, you can take IELTS General Training - the English test that focuses on everyday English (and not academic English).
Importantly, the visa department also says that only tests taken in person, at a secure test centre, are accepted for visa purposes. As a result, fully online or at-home versions are not accepted for Australian visa purposes. This includes IELTS Online, but also the TOEFL iBT Home Edition, OET@Home, CELPIP Online, LanguageCert Academic Online, MET Digital taken at home. Also, low-stakes test like the Duolingo English Test cannot be used for your visa.
English requirements for Australian visas
The immigration department groups visa English requirements into levels such as Functional English, Vocational English, Competent English, Proficient English, and Superior English. These levels matter because different visa subclasses require different minimum scores, and higher English levels can affect points-based migration outcomes.
As a short summary, the IELTS levels are:
Functional English is IELTS 4.5 overall
Vocational English is 5 in each component
Competent English is 6 in each component
Proficient English is 7 in each component
Superior English is 8 in each component
Does DHA accept IELTS One Skill Retake?
The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) mentions on its website that the department accepts test scores from IELTS:
International English Language Testing System Academic (IELTS Academic), including One Skill Retake (OSR)
International English Language Testing System General Training (IELTS General Training), including One Skill Retake (OSR)
You must check what level of English you need and what evidence you must provide for the visa you want to apply for. You can check this through the eligibility page of the relevant visa subclass .
Work and migration requirements
If your goal is to work in Australia or move towards permanent residency, the English level you need will depend on your visa subclass.
English requirements for work visas in Australia
Many work and migration pathways where an English test may be required include the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186), Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190), Skilled Work Regional visa (subclass 491). There is also the very popular Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) when you've finished your studies in Australia.
For skilled migration, higher English scores can improve your points. For example, Australian Visa and Immigration Experts say that proficient English can add 10 points and Superior English can add 20 points towards skilled migration. It is also noted on the same page that post-7 August 2025 changes increased the PTE Academic thresholds at those higher levels for speaking and writing skills, while the required IELTS scores remained the same.
English levels for jobs and professions in Australia
For some professions, meeting the visa English requirement is only one part of the process. In Australia, professional registration or assessment bodies may set their own English language standards, and these can be different from, or higher than, the requirements set for visa purposes by the Department of Home Affairs.
This matters most in professions where communication is central to safe, ethical and effective practice. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia says that all applicants for initial registration must meet its English language skills registration standard, regardless of whether they qualified in Australia or overseas. The AASW makes a similar point for social work, stating that its English language requirements for professional social work practice in Australia may be higher than the Department’s migration requirements in some cases.
If you are planning a pathway into nursing, social work, teaching, law, engineering or another regulated profession in Australia, it is worth checking the registration authority early. Doing that upfront can help you avoid the very common problem of meeting the visa requirement, but then discovering later that your profession expects a different test, a different score, or a different evidence pathway altogether. At least, IELTS Academic is accepted by 100% of the regulated professions that require an English test.
