How can I get there?

We are located at Level 6, 388 Bourke Street, Melbourne, VIC 3000 (Next to Bupa on Bourke St).
Public transport

As we are located in the heart of Melbourne CBD, there are many public transport options available.

Bus – The closest bus stops to the test centre are located at the corner of Bourke St/Queen St, Little Bourke St/Queen St and Little Collins St/Queen St. We recommend you check the PTV website to plan your journey.

Train – We are a short walk from Melbourne Central and Flinders Street Stations.

Tram – You can take routes 19, 57, 59, 86 and 96, and get off at Bourke St/Elizabeth St, a 1-minute walk from our centre building.

Parking

The closest undercover paid car park is Bourke Square Parking, next to our building, at 392 Bourke St (This is an expensive option, with daily rate up to $79).

Wilson Parking at Melbourne Central – early bird rate: $16 (in before 10:00 am, out after 3:00 pm).

Question 2

When should I arrive at the test centre?

Accepted Answer

Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your Listening/Reading/Writing test with a valid passport. If you arrive later than 10 minutes before your test, you may not be allowed to take the test.
For the Speaking test, please arrive 20 minutes before your scheduled start time. If you’re late, you may not be permitted to take the test.
If your test commences at 9:30 am, you'll be able to enter the building from 9.00 am.

Question 3

What do I need to bring on the day of the IELTS test?

Accepted Answer

You must bring your valid passport or a pre-approved ID. Only original and current passports or pre-approved IDs are accepted. Photocopies or certified copies won't be accepted.
You can bring an unlabelled, see-through water bottle. We provide pencils and erasers, so you don't need to bring your own stationery into the test room

Question 4

What can I do if I booked the wrong module (AC/GT)?

Accepted Answer

For IELTS on computer (IOC), you can ONLY request an update of the module (AC/GT) for the same test session up to 2 days before your test date.
Unfortunately, once a session booking is closed (2 days before your test date), no changes can be made - cancellation, refund or transfer requests will not be accepted in this case.

Question 5

I don’t have a valid passport on my test date; can I use my driver’s licence or other ID?

Accepted Answer

You must use the same ID you used to book your test. You can still apply to sit the IELTS test in Australia if you don’t have a passport, however only for three specific scenarios given below. The following options will have to go through our Verification of Identity process before being accepted.

Australian citizen by birth – birth certificate, and drivers’ licence.

Not born in Australia, but acquired Australian citizenship – Australian citizen certificate, and drivers’ licence.

Refugee – A travel document – a certificate with a serial number able to be verified by the Australian government or an Immi Card – issued by the Australian government. We also ask that you provide us with a driving licence.

In exceptional circumstances, and when a test taker does not have a valid passport or national identity card, please contact us at least one week before your preferred test date. Approval for alternative ID must be received before the test day. Without prior approval, you'll not be able to sit the test and transfers and refunds will not be available.

Question 6

Will my test be eligible for IELTS One Skill Retake?

Accepted Answer

Yes, all IELTS on computer tests at Australian Institute of Language (AIL) are eligible for IELTS One Skill Retake. You can take one IELTS One Skill Retake for each full IELTS test you've taken at an eligible centre within 60 days of the original full test date.
Please note that IELTS One Skill Retake is currently not available for IELTS on paper.

Question 7

Do I need computer skills to take the computer-delivered IELTS test?

Accepted Answer

No special computer skills are needed. The IELTS on computer test uses a QWERTY keyboard. If you're unfamiliar with this keyboard, practising with one before the test may help. Don't worry if you can't type quickly; the test is designed for people with normal typing skills.

Question 8

How is the Listening test conducted?

Accepted Answer

For the IELTS on computer test – You'll be provided with noise-cancelling headphones and be able to adjust the volume before and during the Listening test.
For the IELTS on paper test – The Listening test is played via a central sound system and we will conduct a sound-check to ensure that all candidates can hear the audio. You will not need headphones.

Can I wear my hat or cap?

Hats and caps are not allowed in the test room for both Listening/Reading/Writing and Speaking tests.
However, religious headwear, such as turbans and hijabs, is accepted. No substitute hats, caps, beanies, or any other head coverings other than authentic religious headwear are accepted for religious purposes.

Question 10

How can I get my results?

Accepted Answer

If you're taking IELTS on computer, your results are usually released 2-5 days after your test day. You will be notified by email once your results have been released. You can login here to check your results and download your Test Report Form (eTRF).
If you're taking IELTS on paper, your results are usually released on the 13th day after your test day. You will be notified by email and an SMS to your registered Australian mobile number, once your results have been released. You may choose to collect your results, known as Test Report Form (TRF) from your test venue in person. Alternatively, your TRF will be posted within Australia free of charge via standard Australian Post.
If you need your original TRF urgently or if you require international postage, you can always ask us to express post it to you (Please be aware there might be an additional charge for this).
At any time within two years of sitting the test at Australian Institute of Language (AIL), you may apply for up to two additional copies of your TRF if your TRF is lost or damaged. A non-refundable $10/copy fee will be charged to replace lost/damaged or additional TRF.

I have a special requirement. How can you help?

In order to ensure that the language ability of all test takers is assessed fairly and objectively, IELTS provides a comprehensive service for test takers who have special requirements, including specific learning difficulties, hearing difficulties and visual difficulties, medical conditions or infant feeding.
If you require a modified version of IELTS, or if your circumstances require special arrangements to be made, e.g. extra time, you must give us at least a six-week notice.
